1930's Home Renovation
Fernie, BC

Before

This coal miner home was found to have no insulation in the walls when it was stripped back to the wood frame. The following improvements went into this renovation:

  • thorough removal of vermiculite (asbestos) from the attic to eliminate a harmful contaminant
  • rebuilt with a new layout to maximize solar gains
  • sealed with spray foam insulation to ensure a consistent R-value throughout
  • sealed underfloor with spray foam insulation to protect from crawlspace air leaks and contaminants
  • furnished with upgraded electrical and plumbing to increase the home's energy-efficiency
  • upgraded with EnergyStar windows and appliances, dual-flush toilets, water-conserving faucets, energy smart lighting, programmable thermostats, dual fans on the gas fireplace and kept the clothesline to reduce the home's energy consumption
  • installed with hardwood flooring to replace the carpet that caused poor indoor air quality
  • upgraded with solid wood trim and cabinets, and low-VOC paint to eradicate toxic chemicals and maintain high quality indoor air
  • finished with eco-friendly siding that has a lifetime warranty

Careful attention was taken to envelope the home so as to eliminate air leaks and heat loss, renewable products were used when available, and waste materials were reused, sorted and recycled.
This home is very cool on a hot day and its energy bills have been reduced by 50%.
